Even wear
Wear spread evenly across the sole is what a well-matched shoe and a balanced stride look like.
What it means
When the tread rounds off gradually everywhere and no zone is bald while another is crisp, the shoe is spreading the load the way it was designed to. This is the pattern you want.
It also means the outsole will not tell you when the shoe is finished. The midsole foam loses resilience long before evenly worn rubber runs out, so use mileage and feel as your guide.
What to do about it
- Buy the same model again if it is still made. Even wear is the strongest evidence that a shoe suits you.
- Track mileage. Most road trainers are done between 300 and 500 miles. When easy runs feel harsh, that is the signal.
- Rotate two pairs if you run more than four days a week. Foam recovers between runs and both pairs last longer.

Can a shoe wear evenly and still be wrong for me?
Rarely. The exceptions are fit problems, such as a heel that slips or a toe box that pinches, which do not show on the outsole.
