Toe drag and scuffed toe caps
Scuffing at the very front of the sole means the foot is not clearing the ground on the swing.
What it means
Wear right at the tip of the shoe, on the toe cap and the front edge of the outsole, does not come from landing or pushing off. It comes from the foot brushing the ground on the way through. Tired runners do it late in long runs, and runners with tight hip flexors or weak hip lifters do it all the time.
It is common on one side only, which usually matches the side that gets tired first or has an old injury.
It is worth fixing because a toe that catches on uneven ground is how trail falls happen and how road runners trip on curbs.
What to do about it
- Hip flexor mobility and glute strength lift the knee higher through the swing. Marching drills and A-skips help.
- Check that the shoe is not too long. A thumb width of space is plenty; more than that and the toe spring drags.
- Lighter shoes reduce drag late in long runs when form fades.

My toe cap is shredded on trail shoes. Same thing?
Often, yes. On rocky trail some toe scuffing is normal, but heavy wear on one shoe points to fatigue or a hip that is not lifting.
